Akshay Kumar’s latest release, “Khel Khel Mein,” has faced an uphill battle at the box office, underperforming despite favorable reviews. Released alongside “Stree 2,” the much-anticipated sequel to the 2018 horror-comedy hit, the film has struggled to draw audiences.
Decent Reviews But Low Box Office Numbers
“Khel Khel Mein,” directed by Mudassar Aziz and featuring a talented cast including Fardeen Khan, Ammy Virk, Aditya Seal, Taapsee Pannu, Vaani Kapoor, and Pragya Jaiswal, presents an interesting plot adapted from the Italian film “Perfetti Sconosciuti” (Perfect Strangers). Despite its engaging storyline, where friends uncover secrets through a game involving their phones, the film has not resonated with moviegoers.
The movie has only managed to garner around Rs 21.30 crore at the box office, with a tenth-day earning of approximately Rs 1.25 crore, far below expectations.
“Stree 2” Overshadows “Khel Khel Mein”
The timing of “Khel Khel Mein’s” release seems to be a major factor in its lackluster performance. Competing against the star-studded “Stree 2,” featuring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, the film was significantly overshadowed. The sequel’s strong fan base and widespread anticipation led to a box office triumph, leaving little room for other films, including John Abraham’s “Vedaa,” to shine.
Uncertain Future for the Film
With “Stree 2” continuing to dominate, the future of “Khel Khel Mein” looks uncertain. The film will unlikely see a significant rise in viewership and may soon exit theaters. While this is a setback for Akshay Kumar, whose recent films have generally performed well, it underscores the critical importance of choosing the right release date to avoid direct competition with major blockbusters.
