Akshay Kumar’s latest comedy film, Khel Khel Mein, continues to face a tough time at the box office. Despite six days of release, the movie has yet to reach the Rs 20 crore milestone—a figure Kumar’s films used to achieve within a day or two.
According to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk, the film managed to earn only Rs 1.1 crore on its first Tuesday, bringing its six-day total to a modest Rs 17.15 crore.
Poor Occupancy and Show Numbers
Directed by Mudassar Aziz, Khel Khel Mein saw a sharp decline in audience turnout with an overall occupancy rate of just 18.43% on Tuesday. The film had a significant number of shows, with 288 in the National Capital Region (NCR), 212 in Mumbai, and 189 in Ahmedabad. Other regions like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, and Chennai hosted between 14 and 75 shows.
Despite the high number of shows in major cities like Mumbai and NCR, occupancy remained low at just 24.75% in Mumbai and 20.75% in NCR. Notably, on its first day, the film had over 350 shows in Mumbai and more than 420 shows in Delhi.
Akshay Kumar’s Third Flop of 2023
Khel Khel Mein is Akshay Kumar’s third release of the year, and unfortunately, all three have underperformed at the box office. His earlier films, Bade Miyan, Chote Miyan, and Sarfira, also failed to make a mark. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan ended its run with a lifetime collection of Rs 65.15 crore, while Sarfira managed only Rs 33.91 crore worldwide.
These films were produced on budgets of Rs 350 crore and Rs 80–100 crore, respectively, and Khel Khel Mein is speculated to have been made on a budget of Rs 100 crore.
Independence Day Releases Fare Better
While Khel Khel Mein struggles, other Independence Day releases have performed better at the box office. John Abraham and Sharvari Wagh’s Vedaa earned Rs 60 lakh on Tuesday, bringing its total to Rs 16.1 crore. Meanwhile, Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree 2 continues its successful run, earning Rs 25 crore on its first Tuesday and reaching a total of Rs 254.55 crore. Notably, Akshay Kumar has a cameo appearance in Dinesh Vijan’s horror comedy.
