Curious, Downey Jr. dove into the character and viewed it as a daunting opportunity. Doctor Doom is quite the contrast to Iron Man, an iconoclastic anti-hero in comparison with a charismatic and heroic figure. This casting would allow Marvel to lean into that dichotomy for something very different and unexpected.
Downey Jr. promised himself that if he ever did return, it wouldn’t undercut the weight of Iron Man’s last act in Endgame Rather, he considered it as a chance for him to delve into a whole new side of his acting spectrum. Reese’s talks with Bob Iger only made him more sure about his choice, as Iger was fully supportive of the idea.
