Agatha All Along Review: A Marvel Spin-Off Lost in Its Own Magic

Marvel’s Agatha All Along, a spinoff of the popular series WandaVision, cannot hold up to its predecessor in impact. For fans of the hit show WandaVision, following the enchanting witch Agatha Harkness, played by Kathryn Hahn, this new series was expected to meet or even top the creativity and emotional high that the latter provided. However, it just leaves viewers wanting more.

Agatha, once a supervillain terrorizing Wanda Maximoff, is jailed as she is unable to control “Darkhold,” dark magic. The series tells us the story of finding her place in the world by getting bits of other adventures, and what we get is actually a set of disjointed episodes rather than a coherent narrative. What started out as an interesting twist on the crime thriller devolves into a meandering journey without much focus.

Kathryn Hahn Shines, but the Story Falls Flat.

Certainly, one of the highlights of the show is Kathryn Hahn. She brings warmth and humor to her rendition of Agatha, but not even the talents of that character can make up for the ills that affect this series.

The show feels shallow, like it barely scratches at those far deeper matters to which it alludes- only occasionally touching on the plight of middle-aged women or the occult. Instead of probing these elements, they are used almost as background noise to the consistency of the inconsistent tone of the show.

The one aspect the Agatha All Along episode lacked was a feeling of urgency. The show had some really uneven pacing, where there were episodes that moved too quickly to be able to really grasp all the meaningful moments unfolding inside, and some that were meant to last longer but were stretched out beyond their welcome expiration dates. This imbalanced the show entirely, so viewers could easily lose interest at any point during the series.

Agatha All Along: A Spin-off That Misses the Mark

While brilliant in moments, such as that of surprise cameos and some sharp one-liners, Agatha All Along is a missed opportunity because it doesn’t know how to capitalize on WandaVision’s success; it feels hard to find its identity and ultimately provides little reason for its existence as a standalone spin-off.

For the fans who enjoy watching the MCU, perhaps Agatha’s personality will be somewhat interesting. However, if one still expects another phenomenal series about the series just by the title, then they are being let down.

Since this particular episode does not have strong character development nor a storyline, it therefore reminds viewers that not all of Marvel’s spin-offs will hit gold.
