Bad Newz Review: Vicky Kaushal Shines Despite Flawed Execution

“Bad Newz,” the spiritual successor to the 2019 hit “Good Newwz,” has hit theaters with a mix of humor and chaos. While boasting an intriguing premise and a charming performance by Vicky Kaushal, the film struggles to maintain consistency throughout its runtime.

Unlike “Good Newwz,” which delved into the emotional challenges of couples facing infertility and IVF mix-ups, “Bad Newz” opts for a more lighthearted narrative. The story revolves around Saloni (Triptii Dimri), a passionate chef with dreams of culinary stardom.

To fulfill her mother’s wishes, Saloni attends weddings in search of a picture-perfect love story. She meets Akhil (Vicky Kaushal), a flamboyant Punjabi boy who runs a chaap shop. Their whirlwind romance leads to a rushed marriage, but soon differences arise, culminating in a swift divorce.

Bad Newz Review: A New Beginning with Unexpected Twists

Seeking a fresh start, Saloni relocates to Mussoorie and finds solace in her work. One wild night leads to a rare situation—Saloni discovers she’s pregnant with twins, each fathered by a different man: her ex-husband Akhil and her charming boss Gurbir (Ammy Virk).

The first half of “Bad Newz” excels with its quirky humor and well-developed characters. The interactions between Saloni and Akhil are particularly entertaining, showcasing Kaushal’s signature Punjabi exuberance. However, the second half falters with repetitive sequences and an underdeveloped connection between Saloni and Akhil.

Vicky Kaushal’s Stellar Performance

Despite the film’s shortcomings, the performances elevate the experience. Vicky Kaushal stands out, effortlessly embodying the lovable Akhil and injecting humor and warmth into the character. His on-screen camaraderie with Ammy Virk, who portrays the gentle and naive Gurbir, provides some of the film’s most heartwarming moments.

Triptii Dimri, while visually captivating, struggles to fully embrace the emotional range required for her character. Neha Dhupia, as Saloni’s eccentric aunt Corona Maa, offers light comic relief with her witty one-liners.

A Nostalgic Bollywood Homage

“Bad Newz” pays homage to classic Bollywood films through subtle references to iconic dialogues, songs, and characters, evoking nostalgia for Bollywood enthusiasts. However, the film’s reliance on slapstick humor and predictable situations hinders its comedic potential. The rushed screenplay fails to delve deeper into the emotional complexities of the situation, leaving some plotlines underdeveloped.

Final Verdict

Overall, “Bad Newz” is a mixed bag. While Vicky Kaushal’s performance and the intriguing premise hold promise, the uneven execution and predictable humor leave much to be desired. If you’re looking for a lighthearted escape with a dash of Bollywood nostalgia, “Bad Newz” might be a decent watch. However, those seeking a more emotionally resonant rom-com may be left wanting.
