Mr and Mrs Mahi,” starring Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, hit the cinemas today. The film, with a runtime of 2 hours and 18 minutes, explores the fictional tale of a husband-wife duo and their shared passion for cricket. Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, the movie blends romance, sports, and drama. However, does it live up to expectations? Let’s dive into the details.
Mahender and Mahima: Unrealistic
CharactersRajkummar Rao portrays Mahender, a dotting yet selfish husband. Unfortunately, his character arc feels forced and lacks authenticity. On the other hand, Janhvi Kapoor’s Mahima exhibits inorganic decision-making abilities. Despite the actors’ efforts, the film’s poor writing and sluggish storyline hinder their success in bringing these characters to life. While the sports aspect is portrayed reasonably well, it falls short of exploring the true essence of being an athlete beyond mere success.
The Journey Begins: Cricket and Romance
The film opens with Mahendra’s struggle to make it into the cricket team. Snubbed by his father, he becomes a frustrated soul working at a sports shop. Fate intervenes when he meets Mahima, a positive practicing doctor who falls for his honesty. Their arranged marriage leads them to discover their shared love for cricket. Mahendra takes on the role of Mahima’s coach, hoping to earn his father’s respect through her success.
Mr and Mrs Mahi Review: Sharan Sharma’s Second Venture
Director Sharan Sharma, known for his debut film “Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl,” returns after four years. Backed by Dharma Productions, “Mr and Mrs Mahi” presents a significant opportunity for the filmmaker. Unfortunately, the weakest links lie in direction and writing. Neither Rajkummar Rao nor Janhvi Kapoor’s characters have convincing arcs. Mahender’s sudden jealousy and subsequent redemption lack depth, while Mahima’s transition from a doctor to a cricketer feels rushed.
Unconvincing Choices and Predictable Suspense
The writing for Janhvi Kapoor’s character is equally disappointing. Mahima abandons her medical career overnight, driven solely by her partner’s suggestion. Her rapid transformation into a cricketer lacks realism. Predictably, the film builds suspense around a crucial cricket match, complete with motivating words and a game-changing six.
Music: A Mixed Bag
The film’s music fails to leave a lasting impact. While “Agar Ho Tum” stands out, other tracks like “Dekha Tenu” and “Tu Hain Toh” could have been better utilized. “Roya Jab Tu” disrupts the narrative flow and feels out of place. The missed opportunity for a memorable motivational song in “Junoon Hain” is regrettable.
Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor’s Performances
Rajkummar Rao’s selection for this film surprises audiences. His portrayal of Mahender showcases his acting prowess, but the flawed writing hampers our connection with the character. Janhvi Kapoor’s dedication to cricket learning is commendable, but her on-screen cricket lacks authenticity due to unrealistic gameplay.
Supporting Cast and Overall Verdict
Kumud Mishra and Rajesh Sharma shine among the supporting cast. Their performances elevate the film. Unfortunately, “Mr and Mrs Mahi” suffers from a slow pace, a predictable plot, and lackluster chemistry between the lead pair. Sharan Sharma’s second film occasionally resembles daily soap dramas, leaving viewers wanting more. Despite our generosity, we can only award “Mr and Mrs Mahi” 2.5 stars.
