Table of Contents
Sony Television has failed to resonate with viewers in the recent past. In its wake, some serious restructuring is in full swing, with Gaurav Banerjee taking over as the head of Sony Network last month. This restructuring looks to bring new content into the fold while banking on classic and reality shows too.
Fresh Content Focus and Axing of Shows
The network is changing its strategy, giving more priority to fresh content and targeting a specific niche. In line with this strategic shift, the network has axed a number of fiction shows such as “Kavya-Ek Jazbaa,” “Ek Junoon,” “Pukaar Dil Se Dil Tak,” and “Jubilee Talkies.” These shows are to air their last episodes in the upcoming weeks as it would give room for newer, fresher, and innovative programs that would fit into the channel’s repurposed vision.
Aapka Apna Zakir: Re-evaluating Comedy and the Comeback of Classics
Another one that has been axed is the comedy chat show “Aapka Apna Zakir,” which was hosted by Zakir Khan. Having started well in August, this show never found its rhythm, partly because Zakir fell ill and took time off. It seems that’s not returning to the slate either.
On the bright side, reruns of some of the classic Sony TV franchises like “CID” and “Crime Patrol” fare better than some of the new shows that have come out. These two romance shows pulled in remarkable numbers due to their tremendous fan following enough that nostalgia does play an important role. The channel also returned the religious drama “Mere Sai,” thereby adding variety to its content lineup.
Popular Shows and Franchise Leverage
Sony TV is also reviving one of the longest-running detective shows, “CID,” whose popularity has seen a fair amount of consistency over the years. There is even a buzz about working for its new season to get the franchise ticking once again. This move suggests that the channel would like to cash in on all well-established shows that have an established appeal.
To add to that, popular reality shows like “India’s Best Dancer” (IBD), “Kaun Banega Crorepati” (KBC) Season 16, and the forthcoming season of “Indian Idol” would continue to constitute the armamentarium of Sony TV. These programs have enjoyed a good run for quite some time and will be relied upon to retain audience viewership by channel management.
Strategy Looks Good, but Success Elusive
The eventual success of Sony TV’s facelift remains a question mark. While reality shows and retro reruns hold promise, it’s fresh, captivating content that will provide longevity. Led by Gaurav Banerjee, Sony TV is counting on the right mix of nostalgia and innovation to help the channel regain its lost ground in the extremely competitive television space. It’s yet to be seen whether this pays dividends, but the channel is making calculated moves in its bid for past glory and lost viewership.
